John R. Clough, 82, of Pembroke, formerly of Harwich, Marshfield and Rockland, died suddenly on February 17, 2012. He was raised and educated in Rockland where he spent the first 46 years of his life. It was in Rockland that he met the love of his life, the late Jane (Raymond) Clough when she would come down from Wollaston to visit her grandparents. It was also in Rockland that he was introduced to the retail hardware business. He worked at Rome Brothers Hardware store for 39 years, starting as a part time clerk and rising to become the store manager. Later, he owned his own hardware store, Better Homes Hardware, in South Weymouth. Known to all his customers as “Dick” Clough, he was renowned for his accurate advice to homeowners and professionals alike. He retired from the retail hardware business at age 70. John was a Call Firefighter for the Rockland Fire Department for 23 years. He served in the Massachusetts National Guard. Love of the sea and boating was John’s passion. He was Past Commodore (twice) and a Life Member of the Marshfield Yacht Club. He was Past Commander of the Old Colony Power Squadron where he had been a member for 56 years. He had also been a member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary since 1973. He had served as Flotilla Commander and in various other leadership positions. The theme running through all these groups was his desire to educate the public about safe boating, thus saving lives. He received many awards for his service with these organizations. Later in life John become interested in his family history and genealogy. He joined and later served as Vice President, President, Treasurer and Librarian of the John Clough Genealogical Society. John and Jane had four children, Paula Clough of Pembroke, John and his wife Margaret of Whitman, the late Linda Meehan of Chicopee and David Clough of Pembroke. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren; Heather Clough, Eric Clough and Nicole Clough of Whitman and Theresa Lavoie and her husband Joseph of Springfield, Veronica Meehan of Belchertown and Kathleen Meehan of Plainville. CIVIL WAR SESQUICENTENNIAL, 2011-2015.

One of our Massachusetts members has suggested that an interesting feature for the quarterly Bulletins would be brief biographies or anecdotes about our Clough ancestors who served in the Civil War. If you have an interesting story please feel free to send it to this website.

Please welcome your new Website Administrator
Hello everyone, your response to this website is been wonderful since it's creation in December 2009and I have enjoyed thoroughly the time we've spent together. Today, October 1st the new Board of Governors assumes their duties and a new Webmaster will working with the membership. I trust you will be patient during this period of transition and be as generous in your offering of information and encouragement. I have found my time on the Board to be among the most personally rewarding experiences of my life and I treasure the friendships that have been made. As professional commitments require me to to devote my energies elsewhere for awhile, I know that the dedicated membership will continue to step up and keep this noble Society moving forward. May God continue to bless all of you. Langdon Clough

ERRATA COMPLETED/REUNION NEWS, etc.
Well, the long anticipated Errata is now in the mail and we are trying to distribute the few that have been returned. As always members are reminded that it is important to notify the Society when their address chnages. The Genealogical Committee is already receiving feedback on the publication and new genealogical questions are emerging. As the Society works to incorporate all the new information that is arriving into a format that will allow for a new publication down the road, many hands are needed to carry out the many pleasant  tasks associated with maintaining this international 72 year old organization. Anyone wishing to be considered for a position on the Board or one of the Committees is invited to contact the President or any of the Board Members to express their interest. Meanwhile, plans are underway and reservations are arriving for the Annual Meeting and Reunion to be held on August 20 in Rhode Island. We're looking forward to seeing you there.

SPRING IS HERE (and so am I)

Hi folks, It has been awhile since I've had a chance to update the blog and let you knwo what has been going on. I'm sorry for that but sometimes professional responsibilities or other Clough Society duties get ahead of me.

Much material has been received for the errata and while the deadline for submissions is not yet upon us, the Genealogy Committee is already busy logging the material into our computers (using a common template) so that there will be no delays in providing it to our members.

Preparations are underway for the annual meeting and reunion. The tenative date is August 20th in West Wartwick RI. Look for the details to be announced soon. We're planning some interesting seakers and feild trip opportunities so if you find yourself in New England, you'll want to attend. It is a great opportunity to connect in person with old freinds and to make new ones.

Speaking of new freinds, we are still receiving applications for membership on a regular basis and are looking forward to meeting some of them in person this summer.

You are reminded that you can send news of general interest to the website and we'll be happy to include it in the members pages.

More later...

In Memoriam
By Priscilla M. Clough, Late Charter Member

In 1635 John Clough

To Boston fled

With the fair Jane by his side.

Since George, the king,

Did not approve of

The way they prayed behind his back.

They tried so hard

In Charlestown near.

Just off the sound so loud and clear.

But Boston proved

An enemy.

So Watertown did they open next.

It was, at least they thought, their best.

They opted to serve

In a greener field

In Salisbury’s lovely country town.

So John built a church.

Which was to be

The cornerstone of his dynasty.

The little ones

Came and graced

The paths lead

To fame’s base.

We pray over the  graves

Of those we bow to.

And give thanks for the right

To share with the

Love we bear to.

perhaps you are related these folks?

Canterbury NH. Circa 1910.

Can anyone help identify folks in the attached photo?  It was taken in Canterbury, NH., around the 4th of July 1910-12.

I can identify some of the folks.  My father (Daniel J. Dunbar), grandfather and grandmother (William and Ethel Wiggin Dunbar), my uncle (Melvin Dunbar) are known to me and are identifiable.  My grandmothers’ brother (George Wiggin) is also identifiable.  Now beyond that, not sure.

The photo is labeled as “Clough Reunion – Canterbury, NH.”  My father was born in 1906.

This photo has been handed down, and I have kept it and taken care of it.  My cousin, also has a copy of it, and neither one of us has any idea who all is in it.  If I am not mistaken (and I could be), the Clough house is still standing at the bottom of the hill leading to Canterbury, from the Interstate north of Concord, on the east side of the river.  Well, at least it was the last time we were there (in 1994).

Any help would certainly be appreciated.
